San Wan Chang: A Century-Old Tea Brand from Suzhou

San Wan Chang was founded in 1855 during the Qing Dynasty by Sheng Yaoming, a local of Suzhou. The name “San Wan Chang” means “endless prosperity.” In its early days, the teahouse was a popular place where merchants made deals, journalists gathered news, scholars shared ideas, and even community meetings were held—a tradition known as “tea gatherings.”

In 1999, as part of Suzhou’s effort to restore its historical streets, Mr. Zhang, an experienced tea expert and China Tea Circulation Association member, decided to revive this iconic brand. He invested heavily in bringing “San Wan Chang” back to life. The shop signs were personally written by the famous calligrapher Li Jingqing.

Quality & Tradition

San Wan Chang focuses on quality, service, and trust. They own over 2,500 acres of tea gardens near Taihu Lake, where they grow, produce, and sell their tea. Their products include Biluochun, Biluo Maojian, Biluo Scented Tea, Wan Chang Green Tea, and more—all natural and eco-friendly.

Expansion & Vision

The company plans to open more stores in major cities across Jiangsu Province and Shanghai. They aim to share Suzhou’s famous Biluochun tea with the world and promote Chinese tea culture.

Today, the store on Guanqian Street in downtown Suzhou offers a wide range of teas: from Emperor Kangxi’s favourite Biluochun to West Lake Longjing, Huangshan Maofeng, high-grade Tieguanyin, and aged Pu’er tea.

Where to Find San Wan Chang

In Suzhou alone, there are four stores on Guanqian Street and one traditional tea house. Since 2003, they have expanded to Nanjing and opened new locations on Shiquan Street and Nanyuan Road in 2004. In 2006, they even launched a café in Suzhou’s New District.

Nowadays, everyone in Suzhou knows the saying:

“For tea and tea buying—go to San Wan Chang, the century-old tea brand.”
